Erin Effinger 3/10/13 IB HOA DBQ During the Progressive Era the American society was evolving; technology, businesses and industry were advancing. However many problems rose in America. Many people faced poor working conditions including low pay and dangerous environments. Consumers were becoming aware of the horrors of the food industry. Women were seeking their right to vote, and the government was infested with the social elites who controlled industry, trusts and monopolies. Progressive reformers worked to improve the conditions people in the United States faced; they worked towards protecting consumers, improving working conditions, and expanding democracy. States actions also affected regulations to improve working conditions, like the recommendations of Illinois Commission on Occupational disease caused the Illinois Occupational Disease Act which improved ventilation, sanitation and temperature. Recommendations of New York State Factory Investigating Commission had created laws that improved working conditions by making the safer and healthier (Doc 4). Progressive reformers had made a large strive towards reforming working conditions for Americans. Many Progressive reformists set a goal to have a more democratic government. During the Progressive era the U.S. government was corrupt and filled with monopolists. The people couldnââ¬â¢t vote for state representatives and therefore legislatures could vote in the most powerful monopolists to take control of the senate (Doc 6a). People strived to receive a secret ballot to prevent corruption in the government (Doc 7). Women fought for their right to vote during the Progressive era. They thought that they deserved suffrage because their lack of a ballot causes them not to be able to help regulate their working conditions. Women worked the same jobs and hours as men but received lower pay (Doc 8).
